parvai-pure-silk-sari
Parvai Pure Silk Sari

A striking play of geometry, colour and traditional ornamentation, this sari brings together luminous royal blue and deep black in a bold checked composition. Each floral medallion sits within a precisely defined square frame, enriched with gold zari and finished with a small green accent at its centre. The square framing gives the florals an almost architectural quality, creating a strong visual rhythm across the sari while balancing ornament with geometry.

The sari is woven in pure mulberry silk sourced from Karnataka, using a two-ply warp and five-ply weft. This gives the textile substance, structure and a rich, assured fall. The ornamentation is worked with 2G gold zari, lending the motifs a restrained metallic glow without overwhelming the strength of the checks.

The sari is woven on a traditional pit loom, with the floral motifs executed using a jacquard. Each motif is woven individually, making the process considerably more time-intensive. The motifs are distributed at measured, equidistant intervals across the body, giving the sari a sense of order, balance and completeness. Each sari takes approximately 23 days to weave, with the weaver spending close to seven hours at the loom each day.

What makes this sari particularly meaningful to us is the hand behind it. It is woven by a senior Kanchipuram weaver who spent a significant part of his working life within the cooperative system and carries decades of knowledge of the weave. Today, he no longer lives or works within the geographical weaving cluster from which his practice began. Like many experienced craftspeople, he moved away over time, established his home elsewhere and continued to weave independently.

The sari is therefore woven outside the traditional Kanchipuram geographical cluster, but by a weaver whose knowledge, technique and working memory were formed within it. For us, this is an important part of understanding craft today. Skills do not necessarily remain within fixed geographical boundaries. Craftspeople move, cooperative structures change, weaving communities disperse, and yet the knowledge can continue in the hands of people who have practised it for a lifetime.

As the fabric moves, the blue shifts subtly with the light while the zari acquires a quiet metallic glow. The result is a sari that speaks not only of colour, geometry and ornament, but also of continuity: of weaving knowledge carried forward by an experienced hand, even beyond the geography with which that knowledge is traditionally associated.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0311/7341/0875/files/03545463-1E69-4AAD-84C0-1BD61485D2FB.jpg?v=1791298205
