Best of Two Worlds : Aswathy
Origin: Kerala
Weave: Handwoven Cotton Tissue Sari
This handwoven pure cotton sari is an exceptional textile born from a distinct design language developed by Parvai in Peringamalai, Kerala, standing in sharp contrast to a landscape where nearly 90–95% of textiles are commercially produced on power looms using chemically treated yarns and artificial zari.
Rooted in authenticity and material integrity, it brings together a remarkable confluence of two rich weaving traditions: the structural confidence of Tamil Nadu, where checks, motifs, and zari are worked with fluency to create intricate surfaces, and the quiet genius of Kerala, where the finest cottons are handled on delicate looms that demand restraint, sensitivity, and finesse. Woven by 40 year old Prakash from Tamil Nadu, the sari introduces nuanced elements such as extra-weft checks, a subtle tissue-like body, and refined thazhampoo motifs, details not traditionally seen in Kerala’s vocabulary and a marvel to execute on pure cotton. The making of this sari is a long and exacting process that begins with rigorous mathematical precision at the design stage, where multiple elements are calculated and aligned to achieve perfect balance on the surface.
The loom setup alone takes nearly a month due to this complexity, while each sari takes about 15 days to weave, not as a continuous act, but through a rhythm of frequent pauses. The weaver must repeatedly stop to break and reset the zari at precise intervals, especially around the central checks and design elements like the thazhampoo reku, making constant adjustments to maintain alignment. It is a process of weaving interspersed with correction and calibration, with absolutely no room for error, as even the slightest misstep can disrupt the entire composition.
This sari is also a Parvai pet project, through which we support an exceptionally talented weaving family of five who will continue to develop and reinterpret this design over the next two years. What emerges is not just a textile, but an ongoing journey, where heritage, mathematical precision, material sensitivity, and sustained patronage come together to create something truly unique, enduring, and extraordinarily refined.
