    Perspective

Molakalmuru represents a significant entity within the silk industry, primarily recognized for its production of pure silk sarees, free from any blends. Historical documentation, including references found in the 1967 Mysore State Gazetteer, underscores the region’s commitment to the art of pure silk weaving. The gazetteer notes, “The weaving of pure silk cloth is primarily confined to Molakalmuru. The weaving industry of Molakalmuru enjoys provincial recognition, with nearly half of the town’s population engaged in this craft.”

Traditionally, the looms utilised are primitive pit looms; however, the introduction of fly-shuttle technology has modernised certain operations. In 1664, approximately 590 looms were operational within the district, dedicated to the production of silk fabrics. Essential processes in silk production include twisting, degumming, dyeing, and warping, with local artisans, known as pattegars and khatris, making significant contributions to the creation of high-quality textiles.

Karnataka is renowned for its extensive silk production, boasting a rich historical legacy in the sericulture sector that has been supported by local rulers for over three centuries. Strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing this industry have been implemented; notably, in 1896, J.R.D. Tata established a silk rearing farm in Bangalore. Both the Central and State Governments have consistently emphasised the necessity for improvements within the silk industry in Molakalmuru. Established in 1949, the Central Silk Board plays a critical role in promoting silk production across India. Furthermore, the Weavers Service Centre, operated by the Government of India, provides essential design development and support services to silk manufacturers and weavers.

The Government of India acknowledges the challenges faced by this sector and has identified Molakalmuru as a crucial cluster requiring assistance for its survival, growth, and development. This small town, situated in the eastern region of Karnataka and bordering Andhra Pradesh in the Chitradurga district, continues to possess significant potential for revitalisation within the silk industry.

Master weaver Ashwin has engaged in a collaborative endeavour with Parvai to create saree designs developed by Parvai’s design head, Ane Thomas. He procures silk and zari through government-approved subsidised centres, enabling the provision of these high-quality sarees at a more competitive price compared to those from established clusters such as Kanchipuram. Parvai has facilitated Ashwin's establishment of a new loom at a relative’s residence, exercising great care in the selection of the specific reed and Jacquard interventions to achieve the exceptional execution of various motif patterns with precise measurements on the sarees. The design of the saree incorporates traditional sensibilities, thereby culminating in a remarkable representation that honours the rich cultural diversity of Karnataka and highlights the importance of preserving its heritage.
