Overview of Peace Silk:
Peace silk, often referred to as Ahimsa silk or non-violent silk, denotes a production method that does not harm silkworms. There are four distinct varieties of silk, each derived from a different silkworm species and cultivated on small family farms in various environments across India. In this particular series, we have used the ahimsa mulberry silk, derived from Bombyx mori silkworms that exclusively consume mulberry leaves. These silkworms are cultivated indoors in cottages, allowing them to hatch and breed, thereby facilitating the production of ethical silk.
Traditional silk production involves the killing of numerous moths at the pupae stage, a fact that remains largely unknown to consumers. In contrast, our non-violent silk production eliminates such practices while maintaining high-quality outputs. The silk undergoes harvesting only after allowing adult moths to emerge from their cocoons, utilising open-ended cocoons or those that have been pierced and previously used in breeding cycles.
The silk yarns for weaving is produced using a traditional device known as the Takli, a slender spindle designed for spinning silk from softened cocoons. The mataka spinning technique, prevalent in West Bengal, is notable for its historical significance, with the term “mook” referring to the mouth and “kata” implying cut or pierced. Historically, mataka fabric has been favoured by Hindu and Jain royal families due to its ethical production methods. The term “ahimsa” is derived from Sanskrit, meaning non-violence, and emphasises the humane approach to silk extraction, which respects the life cycle of the pupae.
Our dedication to creating ahimsa silk and working with artisans in the remote villages of West Bengal, often under challenging conditions, reflects our core values at Parvai. This project not only highlights our commitment to sustainability but also helps us stay aligned with our mission to create magnificent and worthy garments for our cherished patrons.
Please note that this product is handcrafted, which may result in slight irregularities. These variations should not be considered defects, as they are characteristic of the artisanal creation process. Colour representations may vary based on lighting conditions or monitor settings.
Shipping Policy: We offer complimentary shipping services. Upon completion of the purchase, the product will be dispatched within 7-10 business days. Returns are accepted within ten days of delivery, and cancellation requests may be processed if submitted within 24 hours of placing the order. Expedited shipping options, available within 2 to 5 days, can be arranged for an additional fee, depending on the geographic location.
