Parvai Block Printed Linen Sari - Commisioned Works

Our linen saris are handwoven in Bhagalpur using premium 80s Lea linen, by generational weaving families whose knowledge of natural fibres and the loom has been passed down through years of practice. Linen has a character unlike any other fabric, breathable, lightweight, naturally strong and slightly crisp when new, gradually softening with every wash and wear into a more fluid, personal drape. From Bhagalpur, the saris travel to Bagru, where we work with a collective of artists, block makers, printers and dyers to create patterns and colour stories specifically for linen. Artists first develop the design language, skilled block makers carve each motif into wood, and printers and dyers bring the patterns to life by hand. Every collection is created in small sets for different seasons, allowing us to continually explore new colours and patterns while retaining the quiet, easy character of linen.

Selected saris are further finished with delicate lace detailing, carefully chosen to complement rather than overwhelm the handwoven and handprinted textile. The lace introduces another layer of texture and softness, giving the sari a gently finished character while allowing the linen, its weave and the hand block printing to remain at the centre of the design. For us, linen is an all-day, everyday, all-season fibre. It transcends age, geography, religion and occasion, making it one of the most universal fabrics we work with. Its luxury is not in excess, but in the comfort of a beautiful natural fibre, the ease with which it can be worn, and the knowledge that every piece has passed through many skilled hands.

Our linen project has also been conceived with a longer-term purpose. By working consistently with the same network of weavers, artists, block makers, printers, dyers and finishers, we hope to create continued opportunities for the entire artisan ecosystem involved in making these saris, rather than producing isolated seasonal collections.

For our current project, we partner with Azhagi by Aarthi to take these saris to patrons residing in the far West. Through such partnerships, we hope to connect the work of artisan communities in India with people across the world who appreciate natural fibres, handcrafted clothing and the human skill behind them. Each sari is ultimately the result of many hands, woven in Bhagalpur, developed and hand block printed in Bagru, thoughtfully finished with lace, and created to be worn often, lived in comfortably and treasured over time.
