Parvai Hand-Block Printed Venkatagiri Cotton Sari
Parvai Original | Syahi–Begar on Venkatagiri Fine Count Cotton
Inspired by an extraordinary 1986 textile panel created by master Bagh printer Ismail Suleiman Khatri, this sari is Parvai’s interpretation of an archival design vocabulary. The original panel brought together 1,230 miniature geometric patterns, each printed in black on natural cotton, revealing the remarkable precision and diversity of traditional wooden blocks.
We reimagined this composition on exceptionally fine-count Venkatagiri cotton, replacing the printed grid with delicately woven zari checks, carefully proportioned to accommodate traditional three-inch wooden blocks. Within these checks, miniature patterns are hand-printed using the natural-dye Syahi–Begar process, bringing together the earthy warmth of madder reds and the depth of iron-based blacks. The sari is further embellished with delicate hand embroidery, introducing another layer of craftsmanship and ornamentation. These carefully worked details lend a decorative richness to the textile while preserving the clarity of its geometric composition and the natural softness of the cotton.
The result is a fascinating interplay of weave, print, and embroidery, where the precision of the zari checks meets the subtle individuality of hand-block printing and the decorative beauty of needlework. Light, fluid, and breathable, the cotton drapes beautifully, making this intricate textile an effortless everyday sari. Created as a single, individual piece, the sari represents over 250 person-hours of skilled craftsmanship across weaving, printing, embroidery, and finishing.
Textile Details
Weave: Exceptionally fine-count cotton, handwoven by traditional weavers in Venkatagiri, Andhra Pradesh. The fabric is lightweight, soft, and fluid, with a delicate yet structured drape.
Zari Checks: Carefully calculated woven zari checks, proportioned to align with traditional three-inch wooden printing blocks. The checks provide the geometric framework for the miniature printed patterns.
Printing: Traditional hand-block printing inspired by the geometric vocabulary of archival Bagh textiles, interpreted through Bagru’s Syahi–Begar tradition. The process involves an outline block followed by two tonal filling blocks, requiring precise registration and skilled handwork.
Dyes: Natural Syahi–Begar colours, using iron-based black and alum–madder red. The colours develop through traditional preparation, printing, and washing processes, creating an earthy, softened palette.
Design: A dense composition of miniature geometric patterns inspired by Ismail Suleiman Khatri’s 1986 Design Directory panel, which documented 1,230 distinct patterns. Heritage wooden blocks, some approximately 70–80 years old, inform this interpretation.
Hand Embroidery: Delicate hand embroidery has been added to enrich the sari’s decorative character. The embellishment introduces texture and subtle ornamentation, complementing the printed geometry without overwhelming the composition.
Craftsmanship: Over 250 person-hours of skilled work across weaving, fabric preparation, block printing, hand embroidery, washing, and finishing.

Care & Product Notes
A few things we would like you to know
Care
Air your Parvai sari after wear and store it in a clean cotton or muslin cover, away from direct sunlight, moisture and plastic. Refold it from time to time so that the same creases do not remain under stress, especially along zari-rich borders and pallus. Heavier saris are best stored folded or gently rolled rather than hung for long periods. Clean only when necessary, preferably through a trusted specialist familiar with fine silk and handwoven textiles.
Handwoven Character
Every Parvai textile is handmade and may carry slight variations in weave, texture, colour, motif placement, finish or dimensions. These are natural to the making process and are part of the textile’s character, not defects. Measurements and weights are approximate.
Colour
Colours may appear differently across devices due to variations in screen brightness, resolution, colour settings and lighting. If you would like a closer colour reference or any clarification before purchase, please contact us.
