Shringa - Blue Thazhampoo

Shringa was conceived as an exploration of the visual language that survives within traditional South Indian weaving, motifs, borders and proportions that may appear familiar, yet hold within them generations of observation and memory.

In this sari, two shades of blue move across the body in fine alternating stripes, creating a quiet rhythm of light and depth. Over them runs a delicate framework of gold zari checks.

The borders are deliberately different in temperament. Broad expanses of brilliant blue are left largely uninterrupted, allowing colour itself to become an important part of the composition. Along them run two restrained bands of traditional watch-strap motifs in gold zari, defined by fine black and white lines. Against the openness of the blue, these narrow woven details acquire an almost architectural clarity.

The pallu returns to stillness, a predominantly plain field of luminous blue, enriched with gold zari and allowed sufficient space to breathe. It is this movement between ornament and quietness that gives the sari its character: intricacy is never allowed to become excess, and undecorated space is treated with the same consideration as the motif.

Shringa is therefore not simply an exercise in recreating an older design vocabulary. It is Parvai’s attempt to keep that vocabulary alive, by understanding its proportions, respecting the discipline of the loom, and allowing inherited motifs to enter contemporary life without losing the character from which they came. A sari such as this reveals itself gradually. From a distance, it is an extraordinary field of blue. Closer, the lines, zari, checks and thazhampoo begin to emerge. And in that act of looking more closely lies something central to Parvai itself: to see beyond the object, into the knowledge and human imagination held within its making.
