KOTA, RAJASTHAN

Material, Method, and Precision :  Kota

Our work in Kota, in the weaving town of Kaithun, began in 2019 with the renowned Ansari family, revered custodians of the Kota Doria tradition. Here, the loom carries a distinct rhythm, producing textiles of remarkable lightness, where the signature khat grid defines both structure and identity.
Within this context, our engagement with real zari, pure cotton, pure silk and fine natural fibres takes on a particular sensitivity. Kota Doria, by its very nature, demands restraint. The openness of the weave, its transparency and breathability, leave no room for excess, every intervention must be measured, every addition resolved with care.
The use of real zari in Kota is approached with precision. Its integration into such a lightweight fabric requires an exact understanding of proportion and placement. Too much disrupts the balance; too little loses intent. We work to ensure that zari remains an integral, quiet presence, enhancing the textile without overwhelming its inherent delicacy.
With pure cotton, the emphasis lies in refinement. Cotton in Kota behaves differently, it must hold the khat structure with clarity while maintaining the softness and fluidity that define the drape. This demands careful control over yarn selection, loom tension, and finishing, allowing the fabric to remain both structured and breathable.
Across all pieces, the execution of design is central. Whether it is the alignment of the checkered grid, the placement of motifs within the open weave, or the balance between body and border, each element is resolved through attention and repetition. There is no correction after the fact, only precision achieved through process.
Working closely with the Ansari family across a small number of looms, we allow each textile to emerge at its own pace. The goal is not volume, but clarity, ensuring that every sari holds together in structure, material, and intent.
In Kota, this approach reveals itself with quiet strength. The resulting textiles carry an effortless lightness, yet are deeply considered, expressions of a craft where material, method, and human connection come together in complete harmony.
