An exploration of knowledge, people, design and the possibilities of making.

Independent Works is Parvai's dedicated practice in textile research, design development and experimental production. Conceived as a parallel initiative to our work within established weaving clusters, it brings together experienced artisans, emerging practitioners and different bodies of technical knowledge to explore new possibilities in textile making.

Through independently established looms and production environments, we create opportunities for research, experimentation and the development of original textiles. Parvai undertakes the investment in infrastructure, materials and technical development, allowing the people involved to contribute their knowledge, acquire new skills and participate in the creative process without bearing the financial risks of experimentation.

The resulting textiles are not necessarily defined by a particular weaving region, inherited design vocabulary or traditional classification. Their identity emerges from the design, materials, construction, workmanship and collective effort involved in making them.

Independent Works represents our belief that craft is fundamentally a human endeavour, and that its knowledge can continue to evolve wherever people are given the resources, opportunity and freedom to explore it.
