The Textile
Sidra II takes the design language of the original Sidra into a substantially more intricate exploration of handwoven ornamentation. Constructed with pure two-ply silk resham in the warp and fine pure 100s-count cotton in the weft, it retains the characteristic lightness and translucency of Chanderi while carrying an exceptionally detailed woven surface.
The Body , 2,050 Buttas
The deep purple body carries an extraordinary 2,050 individually woven diamond buttas. More than doubling the number employed in Sidra I, their increased density transforms the surface into an expansive field of finely articulated points of light. Despite the abundance of ornamentation, the scale and spacing of the motifs preserve the delicacy of the underlying textile, creating depth and luminosity rather than visual weight.
The Border & Pallu
A traditional twill-woven gold zari band, subtly accented with green, provides a structured frame to the composition. At the pallu, the disciplined geometry of the body gives way to diagonally arranged creeper motifs, introducing a distinctly organic rhythm. This transition from repeated geometric forms to flowing botanical ornamentation establishes the principal visual dialogue within Sidra.
The Weavers & Their Heritage
The sari is woven by Baseema Ansari and Saahistha Ansari, husband and wife, working together on a single loom. They belong to the wider Ansari tradition of hereditary weaving, a community whose skilled textile practice has been established across the Indian subcontinent for several centuries and is associated with some of its important historic weaving centres, including Chanderi, Banaras, Kota and Rajasthan.
Twenty Days at the Loom
The complexity of Sidra II is perhaps best understood through the time required to create it. Baseema and Saahistha work together for approximately twelve hours a day, yet a single sari requires twenty days at the loom to reach completion. Its 2,050 buttas represent thousands of precise, repeated interventions made by human hands, each dependent upon concentration, coordination and an intimate understanding of the loom acquired through generations of practice.
