KANCHIPURAM, TAMIL NADU

Particularly in Kanchipuram, since 2018, our journey has been long, arduous, and deeply rewarding. What began with an exploration into pure cotton korvai saris has gradually evolved into the creation of high-quality, authentic real-zari silk saris, each piece remaining anchored in the timeless spirit of this historic weaving centre.

Kanchipuram demands rigour. The discipline of korvai, the precision of motif placement, and the structural integrity of the weave leave little room for compromise. Over the years, our engagement has grown in depth, allowing us to move from foundational explorations into more complex silk works woven in fine mulberry silk and enriched with real gold zari (3–5 grams), where clarity, weight, and proportion become central to the textile’s character.

At the heart of this work is a consistent and closely held community, eight weaving families, forming a collective of around thirty-five artisans who have been working with us over the years. This continuity has allowed for a shared understanding to emerge, of expectation, of quality, and of the quiet discipline that Kanchipuram demands. Every warp that is set, every motif that is woven, and every sari that leaves the loom carries within it a sense of pride that comes from this long-standing association.

These saris are woven on traditional adai and jacquard looms, where technique and intuition work together. The process is exacting, whether in achieving the firmness of the korvai join, the density of the silk, or the measured placement of zari within the body and borders. Nothing is incidental; everything is resolved through attention and repetition. Our patrons, particularly from Tamil Nadu, have been central to this journey. Their faith, encouragement, and sustained patronage have allowed this work to grow with integrity, without dilution or haste. In many ways, this body of work stands as much for them as it does for the artisans who bring it to life.

The Kannakam Collection emerges from this shared journey. It is a reflection of continuity of relationships built over time, of skills honed through practice, and of a craft that continues to evolve without losing its essence. Each piece is not merely a sari, but a culmination of trust, patience, and a collective pursuit of excellence.
